There are many volunteer programs where you can help Buddhist monks, mainly teaching projects such as teaching English to Buddhist monks.

Did you know that the monks that you teach are mainly young novices sent to the monastery by their family for a short (or longer) period? Financial reasons are not always the main reason. Local families send their children to the temple or monastery not only because of financial reasons or karma, but also to gain respect for the family.

Girls are not allowed into the Buddhist temple schools, so they are excluded from the training you provide for free

Teaching English to Buddhist Monks benefits the Monks, and yes education is free. But do you realize that when you are volunteering in a temple and teach Buddhist monks you are excluding 50% of the population? Girls are not allowed into the Buddhist temple schools, so they are excluded from the training you provide for free.

Every respected nonprofit and NGO follows the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations. At volunteer Abroad Alliance the sustainable development goals are always top priority and we also respect also SDG5 – gender equality.

At Volunteer Abroad Alliance we open our projects for everybody. We welcome both girls and Buddhist Monks, and yes, we have Buddhist Monks that attend classes at some of our education projects.

Immersion in Buddhism

By volunteering at our projects and being introduced by our local team in a local temple you most likely will experience a more genuine Buddhist immersion then you will receive by volunteering at a promoted temple complex because they are constantly overrun by visitors.

We do understand that volunteers want to immerse in a new religion and want to volunteer with Buddhist monks. Therefore we provide the opportunity to learn more about Buddhism by volunteering at our projects in Buddhist countries. Currently you can volunteer at different projects in Laos and Cambodia. Our local teams will be more than happy to explain you more about Buddhism and can introduce you to the local monks. Besides helping the local community you will also learn more about Buddhism directly from the local people.
